Ingrown toenails are a common disorder whereby the upper end or side of a toenail enters the soft flesh.
The result is pain, redness, inflammation and sometimes an infection. Often, ingrown toenails affect the big toe.
If you have diabetes or any other disease that decreases blood circulation to the feet, you have an increased risk of complications with ingrown toenails.
WHEN TO CONSULT THE DOCTOR, IF THE FOLLOWING HAPPENS:
You feel intense discomfort in the toe, pus or redness that, apparently, extends.
You have diabetes or another disease that causes poor blood circulation in your feet, and you feel pain in your foot or you have an infection in that area.
COMMON CAUSES OF INGROWN TOENAILS ARE:
Wear shoes that make your toenails too close.
Cut your nails too short or inclined.
Hurt your toenail.
Having extremely curved nails.
COMPLICATIONS
If left untreated or not detected, an ingrown toenail can infect the hidden bone and cause a serious infection in the area.
Complications can be especially serious if you have diabetes, which can cause poor blood flow and damage the nerves of the feet. Therefore, it is possible that a minor injury to the feet - a cut, a scrape, a callus, or an ingrown toenail - does not heal and become infected.
A painful open wound (foot ulcer) may require surgery to prevent rot and tissue death (gangrene). Gangrene is the consequence of the interruption of blood flow to an area of ??the body.
